Dawn at Seaburn

This week’s well deserved pick from those submitted by the members of Curly’s Corner Shop Message Board is this wonderful early morning shot taken just down the road from South Shields. It was taken by South Shields Man Brian Riley, and I think it’s a wonderful local shot to show the world.

Camera info: NIkon D90, 18mm lens, 1/30 second, f16, iso 100

See South Shields Daily Pictures for my latest works.

Sunderland International Air Show 2009

The Red Arrows, Sunderland International Air Show 2009

The Red Arrows

Like many people from South Shields I was at the 21st. Sunderland International Air Show last weekend, I managed to take in a little of the action on both days and unlike last year when a heavy sea fret prevented any flying there was plenty of action to see this year. Here we see the ever popular RAF Red Arrows Hawk display team at their very best, if you’d like to see more of them have a look at South Shields Daily Pictures.

Belgian F16, Sunderland International Air Show

Sunderland International Air Show 2009

You could hear this one all over South Shields, this is an F16 of the Belgian Air Force climbing thousands of feet into the sky in what seemed like half a second. The acceleration and power was absolutely awesome!

If you would like to see some of my pictures of The Red Arrows they are on South Shields Daily Pictures (my other newer photoblog).

Sunderland International Air Show 2009

Three is a crowd

If I wondered why South Shields seemed remarkably quiet and empty on Saturday afternoon then I guess this was the reason why.

The 21st. Sunderland International Air Show was taking place just a few miles down the road, the sun was out, it was dry and warm, and a few people had taken to the beach at Seaburn! In fact organisers reckon that there may have been 500,000 visitors or more in Seaburn and Roker on Saturday to watch the aviators in what is Europe’s largest free event of it’s kind – a lot of chips, burgers, and ice cream were consumed!

Sunderland International Airshow 2009

Hawk trainer

South Shields Daily Photo is back after a short holiday and Curly and his kids joined the 500,000 visitors to South Shields’ neighbouring beach at Seaburn, Sunderland, to enjoy the 2009 International Air Show. We arrived too late to photograph the RAF Red Arrows on the first day of the show, but here we see some youngsters getting the feel of the Hawk trainer jet used by the RAF’s world famous display team.

We’ll be back on day two to capture some of the action.

Ship’s chandler

138 High Street west, Sunderland

138 High Street West, Sunderland

Used to be a ship’s chandler in the days when they had wooden hulls and sails, now it’s a pub.

The area around the bottom end of High Street in Sunderland would have been very bustling and busy about a hundred years ago when it was the centre of a busy commercial port, now it looks a bit run down, although a fair amount of new business and apartments are growing there.

Odd tops No. 9

Architecture in Sunderland

Eastern Themes

Here is the ninth in this infrequent series of odd tops where we lift our eyes above the level of the shops to discover some the exceptional architectural interest above. I’ve featured eight pictures so far from South Shields but this one was found in Sunderland above a Sony shop on the junction of High Street West and Fawcett Street.

There are certainly eastern influences at play here with what look like very Indian symbolisms, I have absolutely no idea what the building’s original uses were, perhaps some kind local reader may be able to supply some history for it. I’d certainly be intrigued to know why an elephant should be included in the design and so high up.
