Hi and welcome to the latest publication of our series of pictures made or created by the members of Curly’s Cornershop Message Board, the most active forum on Tyneside with over 241000 posts!
Today’s winner of my photography challenge comes from South Shields woman “Stottiecake” who produced this colourful and creative picture following her shopping experience in South Shields, she told me:
I was thrilled that you picked mine this month and it seems very unfair to the rest of your customers who sent in splendid work.
I had been out shopping in Boldon Lane that morning and had unpacked my bags at the kitchen table. I was alone, pottering about making lunch and with it being a fine day my sunglasses were nearby so I tried them on the pineapple just for my own amusement. I was amused too! I thought of Curly’s Shop and put a black handtowel on the table, lying the fruit down, back on with the sunglasses, add one chilli for a smile and a cute button mushroom nose. A green apple for colour and Voila!
I keep my Samsung E565 compact camera in my handbag most of the time so I took a couple of snaps and put one in your shop. I enjoy looking at the photographs posted there and like to join in also.
I have lived in South Shields almost 50 years (born in Whiteleas) I met my husband 30 years ago this month and we have been married for 25 years. We have 2 grown up children and now live near the Nook.

Photo shop – get it?
The Edinburgh Buildings are on the corner of King Street, South Shields and include a photo processing shop on the ground floor where you can take your cd-rom, memory card, usb stick etc. to have your photos printed, ideal for a bit of heavy photo processing I thought, so off I went and got to work on it.
This image originally came from three separate ,jpg files (bracketed at two stop intervals) and they were processed as an HDR (High Dynamic Range) in Photomatix, before the result was sent to Photoshop to have a few extra layers and a mask added, to finish it off I flattened the image and did a bit of dodging and burning in the sky. Cool, I thought – Photo-shop!
What do you think?
Having made one or two HDRs now I’m almost hooked, so I’ll be featuring a few of them shortly in South Shields Daily Pictures where you can catch up with my latest work.

BLT (bacon, lettuce, tomato) baps (large bread buns) only £1.50, – see even the the sandwich bars in South Shields are having to find more imaginative ways to entice their customers off the streets and into the shop!
Found this fellow advertising in Dean Road, South Shields.

I guess South Shields really is little different from many other towns in the UK as we all deal with the economic recession. The larger retailers apparently favour out of town developments with free car parking, bus stations and rail links! Many of the more traditional shops are no longer there and our town centres fill up with charity shops, pound shops, discount retailers, and pawnbrokers.
This one is at the foot of Fowler Street.

Taking a rest
Here’s a rare treat for you, a picture of me! I’m busy taking a rest at the moment after undergoing a heart operation in Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital so the pictures that you are seeing this week have been preloaded in advance.
This is me (reflected in a shop window) taking a rest in King Street, South Shields recently. One of the reasons why I am having this heart surgery was the inability to walk decent distances and sustain physical activity for anything more than a few minutes. I’ll be back with you all in a few days, right as rain I hope!

Was out away from South Shields a few days ago in Durham City, which has it’s cathedral, castle, and ancient university. That’s where I bumped into this tailor’s shop on Sadler Street which caters for all of the needs of the student who wishes to look well dressed, and the humour of the graffiti on this bust attracted my attention.
Shot through the window, so please excuse any reflections.

Ocean Road (through the gold window)
An odd quirky shot with odd colours. This is Ocean Road in South Shields as seen in a reflection of the gold mirrored windows of “The Beach”, a popular town centre bar. Oh, and it was raining.
From the left, a mainly empty shop which used to house a supermarket (now relocated to Coronation Street)), the statue of South Shields born John/James Simpson Kirkpatrick (the man with the donkey), Kirkpatrick’s public house (formerly the Marine School)
