Red Rose in winter

Something Red

Hi, and welcome to another picture in our series submitted by members of Curly’s Corner Shop Message Board, the busiest open forum in South Tyneside with over 222000 posts!

I had set the members a challenge of photographing something “Red” and from those submitted this is the picture which I have chosen, it was taken by Shaun Robson, formerly of South Shields but now living in Newcastle upon Tyne. Shaun took his picture with an Olympus E520with the Zuiko 70 – 300mm lens set at 215mm. The exposure was f5.6 at 1/250 second.

Shaun told me:

This photograph was taken the day after the heavy snow fall at the beginning of December and depicts the plight of the single surviving rose in my border. This rose is the only original plant remaining in the garden from the couple who originally bought the property back in 1935 and rises resplendent year after year. I feed all my plants on chicken manure pellets which seem to give them extra life and vitality all through the growing season and in this case beyond. Unfortunately this winter has taken a great toll on the plants in my garden with the weight of the snow destroying many small shrubs and bushes as well as a thirty year old slow growing conifer which has snapped and will need to be dug up and disposed of.  I also have a medium size pond stocked with a variety of Koi Carp, Gold fish and Sherbunkins which froze over for two weeks and killed many of the fish as well as bursting the Ultra violet lamp housing which is integral to the filter and we did not notice when the pump was turned back on that the water was not being fully returned to the pond but was flooding the already saturated garden, so I could have lost all my stock – what a carry on.
