Saturday Sanddancer Scene #12
Gummer’s Howe, Lake Windermere
This is the picture that I have chosen from those submitted by the members of Curly’s Corner Shop Message Board (the busiest forum in South Shields with over 182000 posts).
We are fortunate that South Shields is located fairly close to the English Lake District and that we can drive there in about a couple of hours, local businessman 43 year old John France did just that when he captured this scene of a balloon rising over the low clouds forming at Gummer’s Howe on Lake Windermere.
John was in the right place at the right time (early in the morning) and captured the scene using a Casio Exilim digital camera.
A new town!
2009 BUPA Great North Run
As each year passes, the Great North Run to South Shields gets larger and larger. This year’s events had 54000 runners, and the facilities to support the run take almost two weeks to build on The Leas. Everything from hospitality tents, to feeding stations, meet the family areas, massage tents, medical tents, a charity village, television studios, you name it and it will be there. They literally build a small new town on our cliff tops.

Driving to the line
2009 Great North Run
The great mass of competitors in the Great North Run making that final effort towards the finish line in South Shields, watched by friends, family, or even fans hoping for a glimpse of their athlete and urging them on to reach the line. Millions of pounds are raised every year for needy charities by the thousands of runners in the BUPA Great North Run, so failure is not an option for them.

Red Arrows at The Great North Run
2009 Great North Run in South Shields
54000 fun runners in the world’s largest half marathon ran from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields yesterday in the annual BUPA Great North Run. After 13 gruelling miles the final stretch along the Coast Road is greeted by a welcome sea breeze and a fantastic display by the RAF’s Red Arrows Hawk display team.
