Tacking under a beacon
South Shields harbour
Members of the South Shields Sailing Club enjoy yesterday’s fine warm weather and gentle breeze by taking to the River Tyne’s harbour for an afternoon of tacking the wind and racing against each other.
On the right is our coastal beacon on The Lawe, a symbolic piece recalling the days when the Sovereign would order that beacons be lit around the UK to signal good news. The last time that I can remember a fire being lit in it’s basket was on the occasion of Her Majesty the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1978, there is another a few miles down the coast at Whitburn.
