Pilot cutter, South Shields

Pilot cutter

The pilot boat “Collingwood” makes her way out of the River Tyne to help another ship navigate the deep water channel through the piers before berthing on the north side of the Tyne.

The Port of Tyne Authority’s pilots have for many years been recruited from a few families living on The Lawe in South Shields where they operated a watch house overlooking the harbour to safeguard river traffic.
