Asda, Coronation Street

The new Asda supermarket (part of the Walmart Corporation) in South Shields, opened it’s doors a week ago. The building is built on “stilts” with much of it’s car park below and is accessed either by lifts, stairs, or moving travelators, designed to accommodate a much greater range of produce as well as a large ‘George’ clothing department, and cafe, the supermarket is already proving popular. This facade is almost 100% glass, providing ample ambient light for the building and allowing shoppers and staff to get a good idea of what time of day it is, the store trades 24 hours!

It is situated in Coronation street opposite St. Hilda’s church.

  1. I like this a lot. You have taken some contemporary British commercial architecture and, through your choice of lens, camera angle and B&W conversion, made it look almost Stalinist. Excellent work as usual.

  2. Great photo but would not shop there – pay only minimum wages – typical Wal-mart.

And just think Asda started out as a farmers’ co-op.

  3. At least it isn’t a Tesco!

Not really a fan of the big 4 supermarkets, as they do a lot of social damage. Although I have to shop at Sainsburys now that my local Somerfield has closed it doors for good.

  5. Unless we are using the singular possessive, the doors belong to “it” (the store) and the car park belongs to “it” (the store). If on the other hand we consider that I have used a possessive pronoun or possessive adjective then my English grammar has indeed been poor, and therefore I apologise.

How do you like the picture?
