Pond near River Don, Jarrow

Pond near River Don, Jarrow

I found this a few days ago when I was on a bicycle ride around South Shields and Jarrow, a small pond adjacent to the River Don at Jarrow, close to the A19 dual carriageway and the Tyne Tunnel.

It’s ridiculously well hidden, a secret known only to a few perhaps,……. I’d been looking for butterflies, moths, or other large insects or even a colourful bird (I’ve heard that a kingfisher makes visits to the river near this spot) when I saw a swathe of long grass flattened by the winds so I decided to look further beyond. That’s when I discovered the pond, and this little stool that had been someone’s comfort as they perhaps watched birds, or frogs, or fished (although I doubt that the pond is stocked with any fish), or just sat in quiet solitude watching the clouds roll by.

There has been some manipulation in Photoshop here to try and replicate an HDR image (high dynamic range) with a number of layers, blend modes, vignettes, and gradient maps, before a couple of sharpening passes. I just hope you like the result.

Camera details: Pentax K100D, 28 mm lens, 1/250 second, f8, iso 200
