Metro train, South Shields

The Metro train

The Tyneside Metro system is a light railway above and below ground which serves the major towns in the Tyneside conurbation, services are frequent and travelling times are fast, we can go from South Shields to Newcastle city centre in about 30 minutes.

The Metro station in South Shields town centre is situated above the shops in King Street and here we see one of the trains waiting having just arrived and disembarked passengers. The old British Rail station which served the town many years ago was only a hundred yards further down the line, so this green and yellow bridge has been a solid feature for generations.
