Dr. Martens boots, Durham

Dr. Martens boots

Since 1960 Dr. Martens boots and shoes have become synonymous with youth sub cultures in Britain and around the world having been seen as the footware of choice for skinheads, punks, goths, emos, and other “grunge” sectors. I still have a couple of pairs which feel as comfortable as old carpet slippers and have soles and leather which can withstand the worst that our winters have to offer.

The boots with their unique air wear soles were invented by Dr. Klaus Maertens, a doctor in the German Army in 1945, he used looted leather and discarded rubber from Luftwaffe airfields, you can read the full story here.

I found this colourful display at the Scorpio shoe shop in Durham on a recent day away from South Shields, they have another shop in the Grainger Market, which I will feature shortly. As you can see, the boots have moved ona lot from the days of cherry red or black only.
