The year of the ox
Chinese New Year 2009
We have quite a small community of ethnic Chinese in South Shields, mainly working in the catering trades, as well as some students, I joined a few for a trip on the Metro to Newcastle upon Tyne to join in what must be the largest celebrations of the Chinese New Year in the North of England. Celebrations were a week late here at the request of Northumbria Police (they had a huge football match and 52000 fans to deal with last week), and it was a bitterly cold day as temperatures struggled to get above freezing point, however thousands thronged the Grainger area of Newcastle, especially Stowell Street under it’s gigantic Chinese Arch.
Join me for the next few days as South Shields Daily Photo went in search of a little oriental culture and celebrated the start of the Year of the Ox in pictures.
