HMS Ark Royal on the River Tyne

The queue

HMS Ark Royal is an Invincible class aircraft carrier and she is currently berthed at the Northumbrian Quay on the River Tyne at North Shields, she entered service in 1985. She is the fifth Royal Navy vessel to carry the name (my late cousin served on the previous Ark Royal.) The ship is currently operating in the Commando Carrier role, capable of carrying an Embarked Military Force of approximately 400 Royal Marines or Army, as well as operating Chinook, Lynx, Apache, and Sea King helicopters.

Ark Royal was built by Swan Hunters Ship Builders’ yard at Wallsend in December 1978 and launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

This was the the size of the queue to visit her on Saturday afternoon, when the weather was starting to turn into a bitterly cold easterly wind all the way from Russia!

I’ve used a Photoshop tint and tone actions to pick out the people.
