Sunderland Bridges shopping centre

Reflections on a shopping experience

We have very few shopping centres in the UK that can rival some of those that the USA is used to, but in the North East of England we can travel to Gateshead’s Metro Centre from South Shields in just over half an hour, it’s reputed to be Europe’s largest, or we can go down the road to the Sunderland Bridges (which is a comparatively small shopping centre/mall). It was originally a 1960s designed oblong concrete blocked piece of outdoor architecture which was no fun at all to visit, especially if it was raining. However, someone decided to put a roof over it and decorate the insides with fake columns and atrium styled glass roofing, and it worked!

I guess I wanted to grab this unusual view before they take the Christmas decorations away, these huge baubles were hanging up high offering an incredible reflected view of the centre (probably an added securuty measure).

  2. Hi Curly
I like this view quite a bit – you have a detail view but a larger view at the same time.

btw, I feel the same as you do at times. Having to select and post a photo every day is tough work. Some days I just do not want to do it.
Such days push me within photography to do something different, or ‘see’ something differently. It takes a surprising bit of time and energy.

I hope you find inspiration or a balance soon. Happy 2009!

  3. Large malls may be impressive, I suppose, but I still prefer small, intimate shops. Your photo of sleek, glossy, and bright ornaments is a lovely sight.

  4. Shoe sale….did someone say shoe sale? Great photo.

  5. Good one. The colours create some kind of rhythm by themselves, regardless of the actual motive.
