King Street, South Shields

Shopping in King Street

One can only hope that at some point during 2009 this scene is repeated more often in King Street, South Shields. Our town is feeling the effects of the economic downturn in a very visible way, there are many empty retail units in our town centre and only a few days ago the largest of them all, Woolworths, closed their doors for the last time.

Despite everybody shouting “Sale” loud and clear, the shoppers have not been thronging our main street this past few days in South Shields. We expect one major supermarket to relocate from Ocean Road to the rear of King Street during 2009, but it will take a Herculean effort of imaginative “out of the box” thinking to restore confidence and provide a street filled with a wide variety of retailers that will once again satisfy the needs of consumers. Optimism right now is not very high.

Selective colouring achieved in Photoshop.

  4. Thank you for coming by Villigen. I wish you a good 2009, with hopes that inspiration comes more easily. I think we all suffer from it. My approach has been to see the blog/photos as a memento for myself, I suppose that works in my case because I’m a transplant to Villigen and Switzerland in general, so I’m discovering the place myself.
