shoes, South Shields

You could be the sole owner

Sometimes I’m absolutely bemused and fascinated by the things that get offered for sale at the Flea Market in South Shields each Friday.

Apart from the grass and mud stains, here are a perfectly reasonable looking pair of shoes – from another age!  The age of the “Teddy Boy” with his ‘drapes’ and ‘crepes’, ‘brothel creepers’, ‘beetle crushers’, or whatever other names they might have gone by. The last time I saw shoes like these I was a kid sneeking into Poretta’s ice cream parlour in Frederick Street for a ‘float’, passing a crowd of Lambrettas and Vespas parked by the curb and wondering if I’d ever be big enough to reach the slot on the juke box. Johnny Kidd and the Pirates were still “Shakin’ all Over” as mother dragged me out after she’d finished her capucino coffee.

Amazing what memories a pair of South Shields shoes could buy you.
