South Shields gasometer

The Gasometer

Looking more like an ancient monument, such as Rome’s Colliseum, or a modern day art installation, this familiar landmark in South Shields town centre is undergoing something of a transformation.

The old gasometer in Oyston Street installed in the early 1900s to store to store coal/town gas has grown grimy and rusty over the decades and is now being prepared for a brand new coat of paint, with much of the work going on behind the protective covering.

Camera details; Pentax K100D, 30mm lens, 1/1000 second, f16, iso 200
