The West Park Hotel, South Shields

Neighbourhood “local”

There was a time in South Shields when there were so many pubs, inns, and hotels that it was virtually impossible to count them all. Over the past fifty years many of them have disappeared, but most neighbourhoods have a “local” where folks can go to get out of the house and enjoy some warmth, company, and a good beer, as well as meals at lunchtime or in the evenings. Generally speaking you only need to walk a couple of hundred yards to find your “local”.

This is The West Park Hotel located opposite one the town’s oldest parks on the corner of Stanhope Road and West Park Road, it has often been said that this is one of the highest residential spots in South Shields too, perhaps this is one of the reasons why an old observation point on the top of the building now houses a variety of mobile communication antennae.

It was quiet when I took this picture (which is cropped from a larger image), the Manchester United vs Celtic European Champions League game had just kicked off, so many of the pub’s customers were probably sat at home watching the game on television, despite the pub having a giant screen inside.

Camera details:Pentax K100D, 45mm lens, 6 seconds, f22, iso 800, Velbon tripod.

  1. I do like illumated buildings at night. This pub looks very cheerful. I don’t like sports pubs though, unless there’s somewhere you can go if you don’t want the screen in yer face.
