Arbeia Roman Fort, South Shields

Arbeia Roman Fort

A view of the colonnade outside the reconstructed commandant’s house and barracks at the Arbeia Roman Fort on The Lawe, South Shields. The Romans built their first fort here in South Shields c.160 AD, and enlarged it around 230 AD and again in 300 AD. There is much information about the Hadrianic Cavalry fort here.
