Queen Elizabeth 2 sails from South Shields
The Cunard cruise liner Queen Elizabeth 2 leaves the River Tyne after spending 15 hours moored at the Northumbria Quay. Thousands of people turned up at night and lined Sandhaven Beach and The Lawe in South Shields to bid her farewell. The car park below was quickly filled and drivers started to park wherever they could. I could see hundreds of tiny flashes from cameras going off on Tynemouth’s Pier before she left with a display of fireworks in the harbour (which unfortunately I had to miss.)
I took this picture from the head of the North Marine Park on The Lawe.
The fleck of light in the sky is a passenger jet making for Newcastle airport!
