The County Hotel, South Shields

The County Hotel

This is the County on Sunderland Road, South Shields, always popular with the students from the Marine College opposite, it is a substantial building of considerable size. There has been a public house or tavern in this location for at least the last 150 years when the Westoe Tavern occupied the site originally. Around that time the surrounding area was agricultural and covered by fields, Westoe Village was about 100 yards away and South Shields about half a mile further.

  1. Well, Curly, since it is and has been a bar, no secret there—of course, it’s going to be popular with students! It’s a great looking building. Those flatiron or wedge shapped structures are very attractive and fascinating.

  2. The very best drinking venue in the world. £1.70 for Carlsberg!
