Solar power

Here’s a good idea on show at the Enviro-fair in the Bents Park, South Shields – solar power for domestic applications. Solar panels on our roof could actually be a boon if we could swallow the initial capital costs involved in installing them. Surprisingly we really do have sufficient sunshine in the UK to be able to gain from them.

I was reading recently about a lady in the Shetland Islands who gets all of her electricity and heat for free and sells the unused excess to the National Grid. After five years of relying on solar energy she is now turning a small profit!

Cow, Bents Park, South Shields

Working animal

I found a cow, a calf, and a couple of caged birds (poultry) at the Enviro fair in the Bents Park, South Shields.

The cow looked a bit nonplussed and sleepy, I wasn’t too sure what to make of it. Do they want us all to have one in our back yards or gardens? Should we turn our parks into dairy farms? Will it help with the world’s food shortage problems?

South Shields Daily Photo is still away on holiday.

recycled cans, South Shields

Recycling

Last weekend’s Enviro-fair in the Bents Park, South Shields included a very clever work of art, a gigantic elephant created from recycled materials. There were wheely bins, computer monitors, plastic bottles, household waste, and these aluminium cans.

Unfortunately the elephant was so big it could only be photographed from the air! So this is from one of it’s legs – believe me!

Bents Park, South Shields

Helping hands

Whilst mums and dads were learning about the environment in the Bents Park, South Shields, there were lots of activities arranged to keep the children amused. This is an inflatable assault course, which proved just about right for all ages by the look of it!

Rickshaw, Bents Park, South Shields

Taxi!

An environmentally friendly and health concious alternative to the petrol engined motor – I wonder if the rickshaw would be commercially viable in South Shields? This one was taking visitors for a trip around the Bents Park.
