Cookson Parade, South Shields

Shining through the rain

A little girl still looking magnificent in her mask at the Cookson Parade, our annual carnival, in South Shields. She was soaked through after marching under a torrential downpour, but with hundreds of others continued to put on a great show for those lining the route. This was taken as the parade arrived at the Bents Park.

Photoshop was again put to use here to demonstrate th ease of using Quick Mask – just hit Q on the key board and choose a suitably sized hard round brush to paint on to the girl’s face with black, carefully reducing the brush tip as we get nearer the edges. When finished, I hit Q again and the “marching ants” appear and make a selection, then I chose select>invert and then image adjustments>hue and saturation to desaturate the outer image a little, then I adjusted the levels downwards. A quick and easy way to bring more focus to your subject.
