Cookson Parade, South Shields

The annual Cookson Parade

We held our annual carnival in South Shields yesterday, the Cookson Parade, a riot of colour and vibrancy as community groups, uniformed youth organisations, and church groups get together to entertain us in a carnival with this years theme encompassing oriental and eastern heroes, a hentai event.

I caught this lady in a fantastic costume at the forming up area next to St. Bede’s Church in Westoe Road, South Shields just before the parade started, and the picture is cropped from a larger image. I took literally hundreds of shots yesterday so you will see a variety of them this week, and also a comprehensive slide show on the main site tomorrow. Unfortunately the weather turned very sour and the parade took place under a torrential downpour, I take my hat off to all those who took part not wanting to spoil the show after months of preparation and braving the terrible weather to bring a bit of colour and cheer to the streets of South Shields – well done everybody!

  2. The parade looked great (despite the wet July weather – typical!)…I remember the poll you did a while ago about a landmark closing ceremony for the festival – fireworks came out top I think? Do you know what came of it??
