Fishing at Fellgate, near South Shields

Fishing at Fellgate Lakes

It was another damp and dismal afternoon when I investigated the two lakes behind the Lakeside Inn at Fellgate, Jarrow, I had only been there ten minutes carefully picking my way between the softy muddy pools that covered the meagre footpaths when it began to rain again.

Just a few minutes from the hustle and bustle of South Shields town centre and you could easily believe that you were living in the rural countryside of a shire county, the two man made lakes are nestled behind screens of trees and heavy shrubs and there is thick and heavy growth of rushes in one of the lakes. They make a good home for ducks, swans, and other birds as well as the fish stocked for the anglers.

This is fresh water fishing, a challenge for those who participate in one of Britain’s most popular sports, as they tempt and tease the fish with the baits of their choice. I noticed that the men and boys who were here were equipped with lunch boxes, sandwiches, flasks of hot tea and coffee, they brought their own collapsible chairs and outsized umbrellas, they were ready to spend most of the day here.

It was so quiet and peaceful I could have been tempted to stay myself, if the weather hadn’t changed for the worst!

  4. It’s an excellent b&w study, it’s faultless. I like the new look template, it’s perfectly suited this image.
