The butcher’s bike

Butcher's bike, east Boldon, near South Shields

Keeping old traditions alive

George Pickings is the traditional butcher in the village of East Boldon on the southern outskirts of South Shields, although the village is not quite as rural as it used to be before South Shields grew and grew in the 1950s, although it still retains it’s traditional village look and feel.

The old “boneshaker” bicycle makes good advertising outside of his shop window, but I doubt if it gets used much to deliver parcels of meat and sausages to his customers these days (I could be wrong!)

  1. I am a resident of East Boldon and it is a pleasure to walk or drive past this old butcher’s shop, with its oozing charm and character

  2. I love the photo and your description. A boneshaker bicycle, incidentally, has pedals affixed directly to the front wheel like on modern tricycles.

  3. Great photo. A good reminder of what Britain has lost down the years.

  4. These are still around over here but none for delivery of any kind. I see some now and then on our bike path. Usually brought out of retirement by some older folk who got the itch to ride. You usually only see them once.

  5. Looks like Fritz is up on his bicycles!
Every month I get a British Magazine called Country Living.
It is full of little places like this.
I like to look at the pictures and daydream!

  6. What an efficient way to make deliveries. I really like the wicker basket on this classic. Thanks for posting this photo!

  8. Sixty years ago, I used to deliver the Evening Paper in Wiltshire on a bicycle like this. One of my teachers used to call me “the boy with the cow-horn handled bicycle”.
