Odd Tops No. 3

Vibe night club, South Shields

The lightning conductor on the top of the building ascends like a huge sewing needle towards the sky, a symbolic marking of the pinnacle of Victorian entertainment in South Shields.

Now the Vibe pub/night spot in Mile End Road, South Shields (fully described in this post) has in the past been a ballroom and a cinema.

Camera details; Pentax K100D, 300mm lens, 1/250 second, f6.7, iso 200

Really love these “lookups”. When I was a small child my older brother “taught” me to look up. It was a good lesson! I now do it with my grandchildren.Incidentally my sister and her husband, now living in New Zealand, think your photgraphs are splendid!! They are still “folks o’ Shields” at heart.

  2. Good photo of the tower, I especially like the rooftops of the terraces in the distance (on Beach Road perhaps?) – and the top floor of the town hall extension is conspicuous but I like that too! Good contrast of the building styles and again, a pleasure to see the pigeons/seagulls making an appearance

  3. S. Wilson,

I think the roof tops that you can see are more likely to belong to The Criterion and the Denmark Centre.

  5. Actually Curly, come to think of it, those rooftops aren’t the Criterion PH and Denmark Centre as there are dormer windows – they must surely be of the Beach Road area?! Anyway, not that important really – a great shot
