Sunday league football, South Shields

Sunday morning football

Football (soccer) is our national game, and despite the thousands who turn out to watch Premiership teams on a Saturday and the millions who watch on television, this is how it looks at “grass roots” level. South Shields is probably no different to your town, we all have our own junior amateur leagues where competition is just as intense, and where some top teams find their stars of the future.

This is a game between two pub teams played on “the Dragon” (six football pitches opposite the beach) in South Shields. The team in blue and black stripes represented The Wheatsheaf in Boldon, and the team in the red and white stripes (strips kindly donated by Sunderland AFC) represented the The Marsden Inn, South Shields.

The match ended in a 2 – 2 draw.
