Vibe, South Shields

Vibe nightspot hides a history

This building in South Shields town centre displays much of the embellishment of Victorian architecture, despite being covered in layers of masonry paint. Arched doorways, pinnacled dormer windows, and a prominent pinnacled towering turret.

Originally built in Mile End Road as a dance hall for young Victorian beaus, the “Royal Pavillion” has held a place in South Shields night time economy ever since. For many decades it was a cinema, most recently The Gaumont, a place I visited regularly as a child for the Saturday morning club. Then after it closed it became a nightspot under various guises, The Venue, Masons, Coyote Wild, and now Vibe.

The Victorians knew how to build solid structures, and this one should stand for many years yet.

Shame the light and the weather was so poor when I arrived to picture it.

  4. Our nation’s flag ought to be flown on buildings like this, especially given this one’s grandeur, height and central location. Other countries fly their flags with pride and the UK should follow suit. Or maybe some would think that that may upset the few to the detriment of the many
