The Customs House, South Shields

One little blue car

It was a damp night when I visited the Mill Dam conservation area in South Shields to photograph the old Customs House. The Green Room restaurant was almost deserted with just a few diners present, perhaps the little blue car was theirs.

The Customs House theatre, cinema, and art gallery was built in the 1860s and belonged to the Tyne Commisioners before South Shields became an independent port. Sitting by the River Tyne it was a focal point in the days when the Mill Dam was one of the busiest parts of South Shields, teaming with sailors and merchants servicing the hundreds of ships that visited this river.

Camera details: Pentax K100D, 35mm lens, 8 seconds, f8, iso 400, white balance tungsten.

  1. Curly – I quite like the color tones in this photo – especially good since you had to work with a variety of light sources. When I saw this on the portal, I thought it might be a HDR image. I appreciate that you go to to the trouble to provide EXIF data, something that I am too lazy to do.

  2. What a beautiful place! So inviting, even on a damp, solitary night. And you’ve photographed it so well.

  3. How beautiful–at first when I saw it I thought it was computer-generated, the colors are so perfect, and so matte soft, then shiny and sharp at once. We have the same camera–I wish I could make mine take shots like this! 🙂

  4. A wonderful photo. I don’t think it would be so striking if there were people in it.

  7. I would like to visit again to see this building because your photo makes it so inviting. I did’t get to see enough of your town when I was there.

  8. […] but like most things in an arts centre there must be more to it than that. The Customs House is a very old building in South Shields which has played a major role in our maritime past, but now it is an arts centre […]

  9. Great capture! And what a good idea to present it in sepia with colour highlights, as it gives the picture more warmth than black and white would have done. Excellent photography and imaginative editing!
