Optical illusion?

Cleadon Mill and water tower

Cleadon Mill and water tower

This looks like an optical illusion, it probably is! I’ve been meaning to take this shot for a while.

What looks like an old mill transformed into a house is nothing of the sort, the old mill on Cleadon Hills, South Shields is a ruin without a roof, some 400 yards or so beyond it is the old water tower also on Cleadon Hills. By going to Cleadon Lane I was able to line them up, one behind the other – voila!

I’ve set the map link to show the spot where I took the photograph, if you zoom in and pan north you will find the old mill and a little further north a long shadow will give you the position of the water tower.

Camera details; Pentax K100D, 450mm lens, 1/20 second, f22, hand held.

  1. devious – what are all the spindly things? Looks like all the technical warfare stuff you get on naval ships, but I’m sure it’s more innocent

  2. In answer to the above, Richard, I think the spindly things might be telecommunications equipment?

This is a really imaginative photgraph Curly, Cleadon Hills is such an enchanting place and I can see it in a slightly different light here

  3. They are mainly communal TV and radio antennae, as well as one or two PMR’s (private mobile radio for taxis etc.)
