QE2 leaving the Tyne

Business before pleasure

The QE2 needed to be towed up river to Jarrow Slake to be turned around, before sailing bow first down the river Tyne towards South Shields harbour and the North Sea. I like the contrast between business and pleasure here, as the luxury liner for holiday makers and tourists sails past the oil rig being refitted at Aker McNulty Marine on the left.

This picture was taken from a spot near the Heugh Street Bridge on River Drive, South Shields.

  1. This makes a great black and white photo. I like looking at ship yards like this.

The sheer scale of the work that is done in such places impresses me.

  2. Curly,

love the shots, but to be honest this one was a tad dissapointing.

From this distance could be any ship at any port.

    Still a different perspective though.
