Claire Wagner

Meet Claire

One of South Shields Daily Photo’s regular visitors is Claire Wagner from near Clinton, New York, she has been visiting this site for the past two years.

Claire is quite remarkable (for a lady of her years) being quite willing to travel across the globe to pursue a fortnight in South Shields as a volunteer, assisting Tyne Wear Museum service in the latest archeological “dig” at the Arbeia Roman Fort in South Shields. I found her knee deep in mud, or should I say “clarts” scraping through centuries of history below the carbonised layer of Roman turf some eight inches below the current surface.

It was really nice to meet her after exchanging emails and blog comments, so today we visited South Shields Town Hall where she could take in the atmospheric grandeur of our ancestors who built the merchant foundations of our future growth and prosperity. She got to see the grand committee rooms, the main reception room where civil wedding ceremonies are held, she looked in awe at the statues of Annand and Young above the grand staircase, and she appreciated the ornate beauty of the council chamber before being taken into the Mayor’s Parlour.

Claire is pictured signing the Mayor’s guest book with the Mayor’s secretary Fay Cunningham in attendance. I hope she will take some happy memories back to the USA.

  1. Nice for you to meet one of your visitors. I trust she’s enjoying herself in Tyneside.
