Old police box, Whiteleas Way, South Shields

Old police box

This is such a rare sight these days, it must be the only one left in South Shields. Tucked in next to the Red Duster public house in Whiteleas Way is an old police box, not quite the full “Dr. Who’s Tardis” but the smaller version. It dates from an age before policemen had two-way radios or squad cars, they ran around on bicycles and communicated with each other by blowing whistles. This old box would have contained a telephone hidden behind a glass window, which the policeman could use to contact the nearest station, it would also have been available for public use, should they ever have needed the help of the local constabulary. The remnants of the box must be at least fourty years old (minimum).

I can remember seeing the full blown “Tardis in Frederick Street and The Nook, South Shields.

Camera; Pentax K100D 28mm lens, Tint and Tone action in Photoshop.

  1. That looks so interesting–looks well- weathered. A nice photo too, with this angle.

  2. Aye very nice to see, but it needs to be put into a museum the rust removed and given a new coat of paint.

  4. Looks like the chameleon circuit is well and truly busted on that one too.
