Sculpture of Christ, St. Paul's church, Jarrow

St. Paul’s, Jarrow (2)

Sorry, I failed to find out who was responsible for making this wonderful sculpture of the risen Christ, but it’s all carved from a single tree. It seems to ‘levitate’ above the Nave with no visible wires or supports.

  1. Out of a single tree? That IS impressive. I’ve seen sculptures that make such a claim, and I invariably find myself staring at the sculpture in an effort to figure out what the tree must’ve looked like.

Must’ve been an odd-looking tree, with horizontal branches like that.

  2. (What I MEAN, of course, about horizontal branches, is that most tree’s branches curl up a bit before getting that long.)

  3. I don’t know, but when I see your picture just have uncanny feeling. I guess sculpture does look floating in sky.

  6. Hi Curly, long time no see. I got your messages. I hope everything is fine. I see from your latest pictures that you are pictures getting the category of artwork. I mean I like what I have seen so far on the frontpage. Of course I have missed many. I will get uptodate right now. I can’t believe you carved that yourself. I have been looking for a funny caption saying it was a joke but I see that you really are the author. It is beautiful.
