Salmon Trails art, South Shields

Art Installations

A new art installation has suddenly appeared at Littlehaven Beach, South Shields mingling with “the weebles”. These works of art are in the form of three large cubes and take their inspiration from the salmon trails marking out the life of the fish as it returns to the River Tyne and makes it’s way along the the River North Tyne towards Kielder Water. You can read more about the installations, which form part of the Mouth of the Tyne Festival, here.

This cube is inspired by the changing colours of the salmon and it is already causing thought provoking moments for visitors. There are ten cubes in all along the River Tyne.

Conversation Piece, South Shields

“Can I borrow your brolly?”

Juan Munoz’ artwork “The Conversation Piece” consists of 22 bronze figures such as these situated at Littlehaven Beach, South Shields. Conversation Piece is part of the Art on the Riverside project, the largest programme of public art in the UK, funded by a £3.5m National Lottery grant and £2.7m from public and private sources. Locally they are more popularly known as “The Weebles”.

As you can see it was a miserable wet day when I photographed these four, and they looked as though they fancied the shelter of my umbrella!

The Dunes, South Shields

The Dunes

Yes, it’s rained!

This tough dune grass is specifically planted to retain moisture and to help build a barrier between South Shields beaches and the roads. Without it’s growth, the dunes would blow away in the wind and the roads would become clogged and impassable with build ups of sand.

This dune is opposite the Littlehaven Hotel near the Groyne.

Marsden Rock, South Shields

Marsden Rock, South Shields

As promised in my post yesterday, here is the view from the patio of the world famous Marsden Grotto in South Shields.

Normally you can expect to see an expanse of the broad pebbled beach leading towards Marsden Rock but on this day the tide was so high that it was in danger of breaching the wall making the bar and restaurant awash with this deep foam creating sea water! (This has happened on a few occasions in the past). The water here is only four or five feet from the patio wall and the steps leading to the beach!

Marsden Bay, South Shields

Marsden Bay, South Shields

I took this picture of Lot’s Wife during a high tide in Marsden Bay which was stiffened by a northerly wind, and it was whipping the surf and the waves into this spectacular sea foam that lay all around the beach.

Lot’s Wife is the name that we give to the perpendicular stack of rock in the middle distance, tomorrow I’ll show you the view from the patio of the world famous Marsden Grotto in South Shields.
