Happy Birthday
The Boys Brigades areĀ long established organisations in South Shields and they are celebrating their 125th aniversary, the first company was formed in Glasgow in 1883. From Sir William Alexander Smith’s first company the Boys Brigade has grown in to a world wide movement having worked with millions of children and young people for well over a century.
Baden Powell’s Boy Scout movement was developed from the Boys Brigade a little later in 1908. Both are Christian youth organisations developed to promote the transition from childhood to manhood whilst fostering independence, social confidence, and a caring and serving attitude to others. Like many UK towns South Shields benefits from a number of Boys Bigade companies.
This floral display to celebrate the 125th. anniversary is located on Sea Road, South Shields adjacent to an architectural piece which was originally intended to be ornate fountains (but the project never worked satisfactorily after clogging with sand too often.)
