Jarrow Festival No. 1
Cooking a stew
Another event that I went to last weekend was the opening day of the Jarrow Festival which started with a “medieval fayre” at Druitt’s Park next to Bedes World. Jarrow and Monkwearmouth have a joint bid for World Heritage status so it was appropriate that this year’s festival started adjacent to the monastery inhabited by the Venerable Bede.
Being just three miles from South Shields Town Hall it was an event that I didn’t want to miss, with a variety of re-enactments by suitably clad actors. Here we see a young medieval lad named Scott cooking up a stew with meat and vegetables, probably for the noblemen who were engaged in a sword fight in the main arena, it’s aroma was very tempting.
